Separate browser profiles without confusing them with secure accounts
Profiles can reduce accidental account mix-ups, but they are not a complete privacy barrier on an unlocked device. Plan profile names, synchronization, extensions and the handoff between personal and shared browsing.
A browser profile is useful when you want separate browsing contexts, such as personal research and a work account. It can keep bookmarks, history, passwords and settings organized. Start by deciding what belongs in each context. If the answer is unclear, adding more profiles can make the browser harder to understand rather than making the separation stronger.
When a profile is connected to a browser account, synchronization may make selected information available on other devices. Review the account name and the categories involved before importing personal bookmarks or passwords. A profile created for shared browsing should not silently inherit a personal account's synchronized data.
Google's Chrome documentation warns that someone with access to the device can switch to another profile and see its information. This is why a profile should not be presented as a password-protected personal space merely because it has a different name or avatar. An unlocked operating-system account can expose several browser contexts to the same person.
An extension installed for one task may not be needed in another profile. Review which extensions can read or change site data and whether their access makes sense for that context. Similarly, site permissions for notifications, location or media access can differ between profiles. A troubleshooting result in one profile does not automatically describe the settings in another.

A browser profile and a website account are related only through the sessions stored there. A personal profile can still contain a work login if you signed in to it, and a work profile can contain the wrong account at a service that supports several identities. Before posting, changing settings or submitting a consequential form, read the account identifier shown by the service itself.
Before removing a profile, review which local information would be deleted and which information remains in a synchronized account. Export only what you need using the browser's documented tools, and handle password exports as sensitive files. Removing a profile from one device is not necessarily the same as deleting the associated online account or every synchronized copy.
